Donated 1884 by Vojtěch Lanna. The graphic artist and painter Sebald Beham was one of the most preeminent Nuremberg masters producing small-dimensional works. At the beginning of his career, his strong influence was the oeuvre of Albrecht Dürer - as also the presented print, paraphrasing Dürer’s 1514 engraving on the same subject, betrays. Beham focused repeatedly on motifs illustrating the life of villagers, very often employing satire and caricature. His vast oeuvre includes engravings and woodcuts elaborated to the utmost detail, albeit of minute dimensions, which were already highly sought-after by collectors during his lifetime.
