William Hogarth - engraver - Night
Set in Charing Cross, Night is now positively in the throes of the omnipresent chaos. The scenery is lined by public houses. The Freemason and judge Sir Thomas de Veil, legendary for his severity, particularly towards gin sellers, is being led staggering down the middle of the street. At this point, the judge is so drunk as to be oblivious to the triumph of excess and anarchy.
