Ford between High Cliffs

Jan Asselijn

Jan Asselijn - Ford between High Cliffs
Asselijn was active in Rome between 1636-1644 together with other Dutch painters who have associated in a bohemian party called Bentvueghels (Birds of a Feather). Every member was given a nickname - Asselijn was a "little crab" (Krabbetje), as his left hand had been deformed. The painter was fascinated by the nature of the Italian landscape with the golden light and deep blue sky. Having accumulated a number of drawings, he used them even after his return to Amsterdam.
