Bandō Tsurujurō as Kiyomizu no Kiroharu

Utagawa Kunisada

Utagawa Kunisada - Bandō Tsurujurō as Kiyomizu no Kiroharu
The lesser-known actor Bandō Tsurujurō (active 1811–1814) plays the character of Kiyomizu no Kiroharu, a partner of Matsuwakamaru, whom Kunisada depicted in the left (missing) part of the diptych as played by the famous Ichikawa Danjūrō VII. The play called Sumidagawa hana no goshozome was performed at the Ichimuraza Theatre starting in the 3rd month of 1814 and this diptych was done approximately at the time of its premiere. The actor wears a floral kimono and has two samurai swords. His hand holds a tall green bamboo hat reminiscent of those worn by wandering monks and samurais in disguise.
