Model of chest decorated with lotus tendril motif

Miniature models of furniture were mainly used on Dolls’ Day – Hinamatsuri – on March 3, when Japanese households display traditional dolls hina-ningyō in the style of the Japanese imperial court. In this case, the chest model is decorated with a lotus tendril motif; the lotus – a traditional Buddhist symbol – is stylized like typical plant decoration.
