St. Francis of Assisi

This impressive work uses the contrast between minutely and lively depicted figure of saint and an intense shining background. Its luminous intensity is caused not only by the selected colour pigment but also by gold on the surface of the bottom layer of the background. Light falling on this surface reflects off it and goes back through the colour layers.
