The Mystical Marriage of St Catherine

Lucas Cranach the Elder (copy)

Lucas Cranach the Elder (copy) - The Mystical Marriage of St Catherine
The composition relates to the prototype version by Lucas Cranach the Elder. The subject of St Catherine´s "mystic marriage" in which Christ slips a ring on the saint´s finger as she and St Barbara lean towards the Virgin. Of the known examples the Prague copy comes closest to the painting kept in the Cathedral in Erfurt. Here the saints are also placed in front of a curtain, held by two angels. The Prague copy was probably produced around 1600. It is carried out schematically, and the great simplification and somewhat mechanical interpretation are evident in the execution of all the figures.
