Adoration of the Shepherds

Matthäus Gundelach

Matthäus Gundelach - Adoration of the Shepherds
The painting, initially from the collection of Count Georg I Franz August Buquoy, with the monogram MG, departs from the engraving by Jan Harmensz. Muller of 1606. The orientation of the sides of the painting from the National Gallery in Prague corresponds to its graphic model. I tis one of the numerous copies. Gundelach, whose training in either Italy ort he Netherlands has never been proved, was - mainly prior 1600 - influenced by the oeuvre of Batholomeus Spranger, and his painting opinion crystallized into a self-contained style after he entered the workshop of the painter Josef Heintz. The presented copy of The Adoration of the Magi dates to the same period.
