A portrait of a Man

Sébastien Bourdon

Sébastien Bourdon - A portrait of a Man
The unknown young man in the painting gazes straight at the viewer. The moment of surprise is enhanced by the gesture of laying his right hand on his chest. The representative purpose of the portrait has been suppressed in this painting by the virtuoso rendering of a mental state of the model. The painting dates from the end of the 1660s, when Bourdon was once again staying in Montpellier. This is also where most of his portrait paintings were created.
