Alpine Lake

The starting point of Piepenhagen's astonishingly rich landscape painting was the descriptive Empire matter-of-factness;, then followed the influence of idyllic Neo-Classicism represented by Johann Heinrich Wuest and Salomon Gessner, whose work Piepenhagen saw during his stay in Switzerland and then indirectly in Prague, in František Xaver Procházka's pastorals. Piepenhagen certainly continued along the lines of Dutch 17th-century landscape painting and the paintings of his friend, the Austrian writer Adalbert Stifter.
