Design of the Stoclet Palace in Brussels

The drawings with designs of the palace structure were commissioned by the Belgian banker, art collector and donor Adolphe Stoclet. The construction of the house with a garden was completed in 1911 and their spare geometry was a turning point in the Secession style representing Art Deco and the modern movement in architecture. The house, a result of cooperation between the generous investor and talented architect, was unique as Hoffmann designed it down to the slightest detail, including furniture, garden, dishes, carpets and bathroom tiles. The decoration of the Stoclet Palace was done by a large number of artists from the Wiener Werkstätte workshop, including Moser, Klimt, Metzner, Luksch and Powolny. They worked under Hoffmann's supervision to achieve the Gesamtkunstwerk idea (a work of art as a synthesis of all types of arts) creating one of the most famous works of early-20th-century modern architecture, whose aesthetic richness and quality became an ideal artistic manifestation.
