The painting was created in the times when Europe was amidst the Thirty Years War (1618-1648). Palmedesz became one of the forefront specialists of this genre, which enabled the painter to create dynamic scenes full of movement. The military attack is set in an open landscape. In the left foreground, there is dramatic conflict taking place - Leonardo da Vinci suggested, for depicting such a scene, to paint smoke and dust mixed with the air and the defiant horses.
