Coast with Fish

Jan I. van Kessel

Jan I. van Kessel - Coast with Fish
In the first plane the painter captured various gifts of the sea. At the back the coastal landscape is depicted - there are fishing barges on the sea. Not all the animals depicted were common in the coastal waters of the North Sea. Van Kessel arranged the „still life“ on the sea shore using his imagination. The church in the dunes carries a symbolic meaning it reminds us of the existence of God Almighty who created all the animals and at the same time watches over human actions - including the fisherman’s destiny.
