Guardroom with Sleeping Soldiers

Jacob Duck

Jacob Duck - Guardroom with Sleeping Soldiers
Starting with the mid-twenties of the 17th century we can see the formation of a specific category of a military painterly genre - the military guardroom (kortegaarden), where soldiers relax, play cards, entertain themselves in the company of women, read or smoke pipe. Duck captured the sleeping soldiers and a prostitute showing a piece of the war booty. The standing man with a raised pointing finger is to remind the viewer of the immoral behaviour of the soldiers.
