Portrait of a Lady with a Letter

Machek's art has given us many portraits of outstanding personalities, showing the atmosphere and life-style of society in Prague and in other Czech towns in the period of middle-class Biedermeier, an idyllic style in both life and art. One of the best examples of Machek's art is this Portrait of a lady with a letter. Her face is modelled with subtle values of pink, all the details very accurately drawn, while colours are used to faithfully distinguish the different fabrics of her dress. Only the lace is chiefly painted with pastose colours.
