Rocky Landscape with Pilgrims

David II. Teniers

David II. Teniers - Rocky Landscape with Pilgrims
The composition of the rocky landscape with figural staffage and the use of yellow-brownish tones are reminiscent of the Mannerist concept of Joos II de Momper. In his landscapes, Teniers favoured the motif of pilgrims, penitents or hermits, whose presence lent the natural scenery a spiritual dimension. In the Prague canvas, he separated the road, along which the pilgrims are going, from the panoramic view of the landscape, with a rocky hill and some large trees.
