Master of the Pieta (also called Master of the Pieta Campana) - The Crucifixion
An interesting point in the iconography of the two panel paintings, which had originally formed a portable altar, is a small cross held by the Infant Jesus in his left hand. The less usual motif is related to the text of the Gospel, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. ” (Mt. 16, 24)
