Flemish School (1st quarter of the 17th century) - Winter Landscape with Bird Table
At first sight, this is an idyllic winter mood scene: the landscape and the village are sprinkled with snow, the water is frozen, children slide on the ice, there are several figures skating. But there is a catch to it. The ice is partially melted and it is only a question of an unlucky chance when the thin layer with break and the poor person will find his or her dead in the icy cold water. This scenery is a metaphor of the omnipresent devil, and if people are to reach eternal life, they must watch out all the time.
