Felice Brusasorzi (actual name Felice Riccio) - Christ Mourned by Angels
In Brusasorzi’s rendition, the mourning of Christ in his tomb, a scene only illuminated by a blazing torch held by one of the angels, is impressively sunk into the darkness of the smooth surface of the black marble panel on which it is painted. The technique of painting on stone takes advantage of the materiál’s optical qualities, natural surface and colour and peaked in Italy in the second half of the 16th century. It was very popular in Verona and in the work of Brusasorzi.
