Fauns Fleeing before an Automobile

In several Knüpfer's late pictures we find not only many marine paintings, but also motifs from the city. Knüpfer, who in his seascapes combined real sea sceneries with the figures of mythological inhabitants of the sea, conceived the modern city as a contrast to the fairy-tale world, which was close to his heart and which he obviously preferred to the aggressive modern civilization.
