The Annunciation to the Virgin

Salomon de Bray

Salomon de Bray - The Annunciation to the Virgin
The face of Virgin Mary surprised by Archangel Gabriel is not idealized - the painter chose the type of a Dutch village woman whom he dressed into a white blouse, bodice and a blue skirt. To the right there is a spinning wheel for spinning wool as an allusion to Mary’s temple service, part of which were sewing works. De Bray was a multi - faceted painter - he composed poems (especially with a strong love theme), joined the urbanistic development of Haarlem as an architect, and was also an art theoretician.
