Fleeing Peasants (An Episode from the thirty-year war)

This striking history genre, peasants fleeing before the enemy, has been handled in many modifications and in different historic contexts by painters trained in Ruben’s class. In this picture we most probably have before us the dramatic 1628 peasant uprising in eastern Bohemia. In its day the painting was very popular and judged Maixner’s best.
