Bohumil Kubišta

Bohumil Kubišta - St. Sebastian
Saint Sebastian by Bohumil Kubišta belongs to ‘cubo-expressionism’ where the cubistic form (especially in the sense of geometry and non-linear perspective) met with the expressionistic content. Kubišta thought over his paintings thoroughly, attributing specific meanings to individual colours and shapes (e.g. green symbolised death and round shapes referred to organic matter while angular shapes referred to the transcendental). Kubišta used the motif of a Christian martyr as a symbolic self-portrait because he regarded himself as the martyr of modern art.
