Landscape With a Swamp

Julius Mařák

Julius Mařák - Landscape With a Swamp
In the eighties Mařák successfully and with considerable inventiveness arranged ever new views of forest paths, forest boundaries and beech woods in the early-morning sun and evening twilight. He was master at expressing with colours the play of the sun’s reflexes and of velvety shades and half-shades both in the green leaves of tree tops and on the wilted leaves on the ground. With colour alone he rendered the difference between the juicy green of moss in the woods and of grasses in the meadows and the blue-green depth of pools and swamps. For many paintings, as e.g. for this Landscape with swamps, Mařák made preparatory sketches in oil painted on the spot. These impressions of nature brought him very close to systematic plein-air painting. Mařák used to take his students to the country teaching them an unmediated appreciation of nature.
