A View of Bubeneč

Motifs from Prague surroundings are frequent in Mánes's work. There exist two sketches in oil for this picture of Bubeneč, which give us a good idea of the artist's approach to painting and his search of the definitive form: he suppressed some details and somewhat modified the position of several key elements in favour of the overall visual impact of the painting. The end result is an idyllic landcape; Mánes enhanced its emotional impact by diffuse light, harmonious colours and interesting details.
