Woman with Flowers on Her Hat

Gustave Courbet

Gustave Courbet - Woman with Flowers on Her Hat
The painting is a portrait study of one of the two figures in Coubert’s crucial piece The Young Ladies on the Banks of the Seine (1856; Musée du Petit Palais, Paris). The Prague canvas Woman with Flowers on Her Hat (1857) was made in a similar time period as the Paris one; however, the Prague version shows a smoother painting style and brighter colours. It displays immediateness, intimateness of painter’s experience of nature, but Coubert focused rather on the sensual qualities of the topic, specifically on the depiction of the body tissue and detailed rendering of the flowers in the woman’s hat.
