Autumn in the Woods (Gathering Brushwood)

Julius Mařák

Julius Mařák - Autumn in the Woods (Gathering Brushwood)
In 1885 Mařák made several trips along the Danube and in Lower Austria. We have from that period many drawings, which the painter later tended to use for his paintings, e.g.this view of a path in a birch wood with three resting girls going home with brushwood. The predominant values - green-yellow and green-blue - enhance the optical impression of the picture. In the same year Mařák used the natural setting of this Autumn in the woods for the painting Coming home from pasturing - he simply changed some details and instead of the central motif of three girls he used a shepherd with sheep.
