Autumn Evening

Julius Mařák

Julius Mařák - Autumn Evening
In 1888-1889, changing the composition and colours, Mařák modified several times the motif of evening twilight, with the shepherds driving their herds home from pasturing. The painter steadily moved from composed landscapes to real, specific nature, while still primarily interested in impressions, mood and sentiment. His artistic expression and the desire to capture every possible detail brought him, however, closer to reality. The dominant feature of this Autumn evening is the masterly rendering of the melancholy evening mood in a calm, peaceful landscape, with a shepherd passing with his sheep in the last rays of the seting sun and in a shower of yellow leaves.
