The Egg Market in Prague

Luděk Marold - The Egg Market in Prague
The 1880s and 1890s revived an interest in realistic genre paintings of town life. Figure compositions of everyday street scenes, in many ways counterparts of popular plays and novels, attracted considerable attention at exhibitions. Both painting and literature discovered urban charm and ambience. Among the best paintings of this kind is this picture of the market in Rytířská Street. With almost photographic accuracy, brilliant brush-strokes and striking colour cadences Marold recorded every detail - when exhibited, the picture created quite a stir and was bought by the State.
