Aert van der Neer

Aert van der Neer - Dutch Village by Sunrise
Neer was master of night scenes - he searched his inspiration for river landscapes in moonlight on the banks of the rivers. Amstel and Vecht. He was more interested in the rendering of the atmosphere of the landscapes rather than the precise topographic record. He focused on the moonlight lighting the landscape and mirroring on the water surface. Neert did not receive high sums for his works and that is why he became a keeper of tavern in 1659; however, he went bankrupt three years later and died in poor conditions.
