Peasant on the Way to Market

Frans Snyders

Frans Snyders - Peasant on the Way to Market
Snyders was clearly inspired by the works of Netherlandish masters of the second half of the 16th century Pieter Aertsen and Joachim Beuckelaer, judging from the way he placed the large figures of a farmer and his wife into the foreground of the scene. The man is carrying a roe deer on his shoulders and holding a big basket with grapes in his hands, while the woman is carrying a basket on her head. Both grapes as well as birds and various kinds of vegetable and fruit incorporate isolated still lifes into the genre scene.
