Sailing Boat near the Shore

The most important representative of the Flemish seascape painting was doubtless Bonaventura I Peeters. In his works, he often depicted sea storms and dramatic moments related to them, or he described the coast landscape. In our painting, the boat sailing along the shore is overcoming the swelling waves. Those, together with the darkened sky, foretell of the traps and dangers awaiting the seamen on the open sea.
