Large Torso

Charles Despiau

Charles Despiau - Large Torso
This sculpture stands for the peak of Despiau’s figurative art. Against the vigorous plasticity and monumentality of Maillol’s nudes, this statue shows the emerging femininity; its expression is more restrained, calmer, more intimate and warm. Its sculptural characteristics are most apparent in the silhouette, the mass of the statue is drawn out into width, volume somewhat concentrated in the plane. Silent meditation permeatesthestatues sublimated sensuality and its monumentality filled with an inner life. This is reflected in the construction of form, its gradual build-up with smáli fragments of matter - this approach endows the summarily conceived sculpture with subtle vibrations of light.
