St Joseph with the Child

Franz Anton Kuen

Franz Anton Kuen - St Joseph with the Child
St Joseph with the Child is the most important carved work by Kuen, created during his brief sojourn in North-Western Bohemia. As to i ts contents, it represents a favourite lyrical theme of Baroque iconography, developed in the local painting and sculpture from the mid-17th century when, following the wish of the Emperor and the decision of the Imperial Diet, the Foster Father of the Lord was included (1654) in the broader group of the protectors of Bohemia. The earlier attribution of the sculpture (Josef Opitz) was confirmed by the find of an undated accountancy record from the Osek monastery.
