Marching Horse

Adriaen de Vries

Adriaen de Vries - Marching Horse
This fully signed and dated work probably comes from the Kunstkammer of Emperor Rudolf II. Its composition found inspiration in Giambologna’s bronze horses, known from a number of versions differing in details and sizes only. The type of the freely walking horse with a vividly modelled mane corresponds to the concept of the equestrian monument of Grand Duke Cosimo I Medici, executed in Giambologna’s studio between 1587 and 1594 for Piazza della Signoria in Florence.
