The Netherlands is interwoven with a dense network of canals. The life of its inhabitants is inseparably linked with the element of water and this daily co-existence was also, quite naturally, reflected in prints. The accomplished painter and engraver Reinier Nooms, called Zeeman (Seaman), specialized in the maritime genre. He devoted a number of print series to life along Amsterdam’s canals.
