Woman with Long Hair

Edvard Munch

Edvard Munch - Woman with Long Hair
Munch’s graphic work most strongly reflects his radically new approach to themes that open up questions about life, death, sex and love. He experiments with colour, the techniques of lithography, woodcut and also with etching. This last enables him to produce subtler expression, but in content he is still developing the same idea. Here we have the motif of the Woman with Long Hair, which is based on personal experience and symbolises fear of a terrifying and uncontrollable being. Munch created his own world of symbols, which are repeated in several works. Among these is woman’s hair with terrifying and mystical properties, which control the man.
