St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome

Israël Silvestre

Israël Silvestre - St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome
Rome was Michelangelo’s second most important place of residence. The papal city offered the artist outstanding commissions, in which he proved himself to an extent that surpassed all expectations. His Piet? - a sculptural group in St. Peter’s Basilica, the decoration of the Sistine Chapel, the tomb of Pope Julius II, the reconstruction of the Vatican basilica and the remodelling of Capitoline Square are all exceptional artistic achievements which are rightly considered the most significant landmarks sought by visitors to the Eternal City. The French engraver Israël Silvestre depicted the basilica from an unusual, northeastern view overlooking the Tiber; the etching was executed sometime between 1640 and 1656, before the construction of Bernini’s colonnade had begun.
