William Hogarth - engraver - The Bench
The significance of the motif of faces, their expressions and the conveying of human character is illustrated by the series of heads in the upper section of the picture, adopted from the works of Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael, which Hogarth added to the print just one day before his own death, and which therefore represent the artist’s final creative endeavour.
