Oskar Kokoschka - Outside Fulnek Chateau, from the cycle Comenius
His last work, the cycle Comenius inspired by the legacy of Jan Amos Comenius, has never before been displayed in the National Gallery in Prague, and it forms a key part of this exhibition. As a child, Oskar Kokoschka received Comenius’ book Orbis pictus as a Christmas present. As the artist writes in his autobiography My Life, the book opened up a new world for him and accompanied him his entire life. The personality and life of Jan Amos Comenius fascinated him so much that he decided in the 1930s to write a drama about him called Comenius. The theatre play was staged in Hamburg in the 1970s and was also filmed. Kokoschka also did a graphic cycle in colour lithography (1976), which was distributed as a collector’s album in many copies.
