Gin Lane

William Hogarth

William Hogarth - Gin Lane
William Hogarth issued his diptych consisting of Gin Lane and Beer Street in support of the law against free unlimited sale of spirits (Gin Act). At the beginning of the 18th century, the consumption of liquor and gin in particular became rampant in English cities and was seen as the main cause of the sudden growth in crime and social decay.
