Portrait of Michelangelo Buonarroti

Emil Orlik

Emil Orlik - Portrait of Michelangelo Buonarroti
Many portraits of Michelangelo are known, yet only a few were made during the artist’s life. Most of the later-produced likenesses are based on only a few earlier models. This also applies to the portrait made by Emil Orlik after the famous painting in which Jacopino del Conte depicted Michelangelo at the age of about sixty five. Emil Orlik, a painter and excellent graphic artist, was born in Prague but lived most of his adulthood in Munich and Berlin. He was widely travelled and journeyed to the Far East to study Japanese art. This superb portrait pays homage to the Italian master.
