Jan Lutma the Elder

Jan Lutma (younger)

Jan Lutma (younger) - Jan Lutma the Elder
The printmaker Jan Lutma the Younger portrayed his father, a renowned goldsmith in Amsterdam, at work - in contemplation over a sketch of a piece being made. The portrait, showing Rembrandt’s influence, exerts a powerful psychological depth. That same year, Rembrandt produced his etched portrait of Lutma the Elder, which captures the goldsmith seated in an armchair, surrounded by artefacts of his trade, with his eyes half-closed - a possible allusion to the fact that the elder Lutma was short of sight.
