Shiba Kōkan - View of the Ochanomizu quarter in Edo
This view of a quarter in the former capital city Edo (today’s Tokyo) with Mount Fuji in the background employs European linear perspective, corroborating the influence of realistic depictions of reality on Japanese artists, who primarily became acquainted with linear perspective from imported copper engravings. This influence is also corroborated by the use of the copper engraving technique, which was exotic for the Japanese milieu.
