Hasegawa Sadanobu - Theatre fan with a portrait of the actor Enjaku in the role of the villain Gonta
The folding fan ōgi has traditionally been a major theatre prop used by Japanese actors to express emotions or to stand in for various items on stage through allusion. The flat non-folding fan uchiwa, a necessary aid in the Japanese summer, was (and still is) used to bear advertisements and popular motifs. In this case, it is a portrait of actor Jitsukawa Enjaku in the role of the “villain Gonta” from the well-known play “Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees” (Yoshitsune senbonzakura). Gonta is dressed in a typical kimono decorated with contrasting squares. The handle of the bucket for pickled sushi in which Gonta hides the fraudulently obtained head of the equerry Kokingo, which he wants to pass off as the head of Taira Koremori, can be seen by his right shoulder.
