Anonymous artist - Devotional scapular in the shape of a lotus blossom
The pocket devotional scapular shaped like a lotus blossom consists of two mutually fitting parts and conceals the Amida Buddha (“Buddha of Infinite Light”) with two aides and the goddess of mercy Kannon (bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara) with an aide. The worship of Amida’s name became established in Japan as one of the most widespread forms of practicing the Buddhist faith. The cult of the goddess Kannon, too, is very powerful in the Japanese milieu, as the Japanese mediaeval cult of the Virgin Mary named Maria Kannon shows. The form of the lotus blossom or bud refers to the immaculacy and perpetuity of the Buddhist faith.
