Schwarzenberský palác (The Schwarzenberg Palace)

Built between 1545 and 1567, architect Agostino Galli, reconstructed in 1871 by Josef Schulz, in Renaissance architecture

Used by the National Gallery since 2005

One of the most distinctive buildings forming the Prague Castle skyline stands on a T-shaped ground plan where previously, four houses had burnt down, with a lower wing attached to its western side that encloses a courd´honneur separated from theneighbouring square by merely a wall. All the outer walls of the palace are decorated with sgraffito “envelopes”, the ones in the lunettes and high gables having floral motives. The Schwarzenberg Palace is considered to be a topmost example of Czech Renaissance architecture and inside, some of the halls inside still having desk ceilings painted in this style. The building is used for exhibitions of Old Masters art.
