Diana Getting out of Bath

Nicolaus Knüpfer

Nicolaus Knüpfer - Diana Getting out of Bath
In this popular scene from Ovid´s Metamorphoses (III, 165 - 170), the painter brilliantly combined the figural scene with landscape painting and represented the subject as an everyday, well-observed country story. The group of the goddess and her servants is accompanied by a genre motif of bathing girls. The robust types of women correspond to the contemporary concept of female beauty and approach the aesthetic views of the Dutch painters of historical themes, the pre-Rembrandtists.
