Oskar Kokoschka - Study of Girls’ Nudes
From 1907, Oskar Kokoschka collaborated with the Wiener Werkstätte and his first commission was to be earmarked for children. However, the book Die träumenden Knaben (The Dreaming Boys) was accepted with certain reservations. The original purpose of the stories changed into an autobiographical confession about awakening desire. The artist accompanied his series of small−sized coloured lithographs with his own symbolist poems devoted to love and sexuality confronted with feelings of anxiety and uncertainty. He related the girl figure to his platonic love, his classmate Lilith, who also modelled for him. One of those sketches (dating from 1907) is this drawing entitled Study of Female Nudes. Made like his studies of movement were the sketches of the sixteen−year−old Li (Lilith), in which the artist’s quest for the right expression led him to repeat the sought−for form one next to the other.
