Evening Sun

Emil Nolde, born Emil Hansen, was a painter and printmaker from the village of Nolde in northern Germany, the name from which he took his pseudonym. The coastal landscape effected by the ever−changing atmospheric conditions was a lasting source of inspiration to him, the land moulded by the saline mud of the tidal flow, with the sea water running off in rivulets reflecting the sun or moonlight. He brought to masterful perfection his paintings done with his favourite watercolours typically consisting of sharp yellows, oranges and blues. He compared the manner in which he established the interacting colours to a music composition, as a synthesis of harmony and tension, of sounds and chords. He found the answer in a strong tonality and the interplay of contrasts between harsh and blending hues, and his landscape compositions assumed an abstract character.
